Awards of the Month

The Mayor and City Council made Awards of the Month presentations at Monday’s meeting. The recognition of these special people acknowledges the importance each citizen can play in the lives of the town and of others. Congratulate these recipients when you meet them on the street and remember their contributions to the our town. You have benefited from their endeavors.

National Guard Armory

On a recent visit to Vernon, Brigadier General James E. Porter, Jr presented the keys and the deed to the Vernhon National Guard Armory to the Vernon Industrial Board. Shown accepting the keys and deed are (l to r) Anthony Burnett, treasurer, Banks Hattaway, chairman and Mayor Crawford.

Church of the Month: Celebration Worship Center

16-10-church225Dillon Jones along with his wife Victoria accepted the award on behalf of the church body. Celebration Worship Center(formerly Full Gospel Worship Center) is located about five miles east of Vernon in the Crossville Community.

Veteran of the Month: Bob Anderson

16-10-veteranMr. Anderson spent 23 years, of which five of those years were active duty in the US Navy. Mr. Anderson also served 18 years in the Alabama National Guard. He said that it had been an honor and a privilege to serve his country.

Citizen of the Month: Billy Collins

16-10-citizen225Billy Collins is well known for his many years as a high school/college coach. He began coaching in 1970 at Aliceville High School from which he transferred to LCHS and then the University of West Alabama and Maplesville. He returned to Lamar county to coach at Kennedy and Sulligent and finally LCHS. Billy was married to the late Ginger Rasbury Collins and they have two daughters, Lindsay Collins and Katherine Collins Cunningham.
